Open mowed field on ridgetop around the tower ca. 250m ESE. Plot GWNF.17 is located ca. 100m SW. It is a Red Oak / Pennsylvania Sedge glade. Downslope to the W ca. 20m is a Red Oak / Witch Hazel forest.;Open and sunny woodland of Sweet Birch and Mountain Ash growing on a steep W facing sandstone talus slope. Made up of chunks roughly 0.5m - 1m in size. The Birch trees all have gnarled branches sprouting from trunks about waist high, and the Mountain Ash are growing in clumps. There are fire scars with charcoal on the bases of the large Betula allegheniensis. Soil consists of organic accumulations on rock.
Representativeness
Small patch of an open talus field woodland growing on the Western flank of Shenandoah Mtn. dominated by Betula lenta and and Sorbus americana over Lasalia papilosa lichen on rock. Very similar to plot sampled South of here near Reddish Knob GWNF.14?
